Voluntary simplicity is making intentional choices in the key areas of your life.

“The main idea behind [voluntary simplicity] is to be intentional about your choices.”

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve tried to write this post and failed, miserably!

Everytime I examined my personal way of Simple Living I was struck by just how “simple” it was. My Simple Living lifestyle wasn’t ground breaking or earth shattering. In fact, it was pretty boring.

I had no intentions of selling off everyone of my possessions nor cutting my square footage in half.

And each time I questioned my own version of Simple Living I wondered if I was in the position to speak with authority.

What I forgot, from reading all the stories was to remember voluntary simplicity is very personal. There is no single way or right way to achieve voluntary simplicity!

“Living with less is a life philosophy; it’s not about the number of things you own.”

And then I always reminded myself that my lifestyle, currently is an in-progress journey.

For me simple living is:

Minimize my material possessions: through garage sales and donations to charities.
Maintain minimal material possessions: without up-keep.
Reduce all forms of debt:
Operate my own business: web & graphic arts business
Move to a home where we can raise multiple Alaskan malamutes: who are beautiful and well-trained.
Get involved in the local community: through volunteer efforts
Fitness: Get in shape
Take yearly family vacations

Everything I have read so far discusses voluntary simplicity in general and interviews people who are already living the voluntary simplicity lifestyle but nothing outlines how to simplify or start on the path to voluntary simplicity.
And part of me gets it. Voluntary simplicity is very personal! It never means the same thing for any two people. But being the type of person I am I could really use a blueprint or instructions at least to get me started.

Even if you are not planning on following the simple living movement I would love to hear any way in which you plan to better your life in the comments below.
